The Texas State Knife & Tomahawk Championship was started by D.W. Denton as a promotion at a large flea market in Houston, TX in 1996. After four years the flea market dropped the sponsorship, so a small group of new throwers took the throw to Canton, TX in 2000, with 19 throwers competing. The Cedar Creek Knife & Hawk Club was formed and the next year the event was moved to Malakoff, TX where it has grown each year, and is now in the 2008 Guinness book of world records as the largest Mountain Man throwing event in the world. In 2008 there were 79 throwers that competed in pro, amateur, junior and youth divisions with over $5,000 in cash prizes and trophies.

The Cedar Creek Knife & Hawk Club promotes and teaches the art of knife and tomahawk throwing. Safety is taught as the number one rule. The Club also keeps the spirit of the Mountain Man alive by dressing in pre-1840 attire for the throwing events. The Club would like to thank all those who have supported the Texas State Championship in the past and welcomes new throwers and supporters to the event.
